Stepdad: ‘Scumbag’ who stabbed teens terrorized neighborhood

By Staff | Jun 20, 2011

NASHUA – Family and friends of two teenage brothers allegedly stabbed by a 67-year-old man say they’re outraged the suspect hasn’t been charged with attempted murder.

About 20 people, including one of the victims and his mother, went to Nashua District Court on Friday morning to speak to prosecutors. They sought, unsuccessfully, to have the suspect’s bail revoked or raised.

Ronald Bourdon, 67, remained at Valley Street jail in Manchester, where he’s being held in lieu of $75,000 cash or surety bail. Bourdon has a felony conviction in New Jersey, according to police.

Bourdon is facing felony assault charges for allegedly stabbing Scott Dunlap, 17, and his brother, Dylan Fitzgerald, 16.

Dunlap remains in Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston recovering from surgery to repair damage caused by a stab wound to the abdomen, said the teens’ mother, Deborah Fitzgerald. He was in stable condition Friday, his mother said.

Dunlap would have graduated from Nashua High School North today . Instead, he’s expected to remain in the hospital until at least early next week, and his recovery may take months, said family members, who said he nearly bled to death in the Tuesday attack.

Dylan Fitzgerald received 16 stitches for stab wounds to his arm.

“Something like this should never have happened in the first place,” Deborah Fitzgerald said.

“It’s an outrage,” said Christopher Prevett, Deborah Fitzgerald’s boyfriend, who said he’s the boys’ stepdad. “This scumbag should never have gotten out.”

Prevett and some other French Hill residents say Bourdon has terrorized the neighborhood in the six years he has lived there.

Tammy Ciampa, who lives next door, said Bourdon would peer into their backyard pool and into her bedroom window. Bourdon would ask her to put on a bathing suit, and he went as far as to cut tree branches so he could have a better view of her house and yard, Ciampa said.

Ciampa sat outside a courtroom holding a thick file, which contained court documents, notes and photos, that she had kept on Bourdon.

“This has been my life for the past six years,” said Ciampa, who has lived at 18 Linden St. for 15 years.

“He made me a prisoner and my family a prisoner of our own home.”

The alleged assault occurred at Bourdon’s house at 201?2 Linden St. in the city’s French Hill neighborhood about six blocks from where the boys live.

Dylan Fitzgerald said the teenagers had been invited there by Robert Derome, Dylan Fitzgerald’s biological father and Bourdon’s friend, to “earn some money” by doing yardwork.

They said Derome was at Bourdon’s house at the time of the attack.

Nashua Police Lt. Frank Sullivan said police were looking for Derome, 60, as “a person of interest” on Friday morning. Derome had some outstanding bench warrants for minor offenses, and police expected to have him in custody shortly, Sullivan said.

The incident remains under investigation, Sullivan said.

Bourdon accused the teens of stealing a laptop, Dylan Fitzgerald said. When the teens said the laptop was right behind where Bourdon was sitting, he turned, grabbed a knife and stabbed Dunlap in the stomach, Dylan Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said he was stabbed when he got between Bourdon and his brother, who was badly injured.

After receiving a stab wound that cut through muscle, Fitzgerald was able to knock Bourdon to the ground and kick him in the face before helping his brother escape to Ciampa’s house, Fitzgerald said.

Other family friends and Ward 3 Alderman Diane Sheehan went to District Court to speak to police prosecutors. Deborah Fitgerald said she was advised to seek another restraining order against Bourdon in case he makes bail.

The prosecutor said the bail set for Bourdon was appropriate based on precedent of suspects who faced similar charges, Prevett said they were told.

Bourdon is scheduled to appear in court on June 28 for a probable-cause hearing.
