Milford soph wins Comcast broadcasting gig
MILFORD – All-state midfielder Morgan Andrews already stands tall on the soccer field.
But next month, the 15-year-old will be looking up at another class of athletes, not to mention 17 championship banners.
Andrews will file a television report for a Celtics game, and her work will appear on the post-game show after what she hopes will be a Boston win.
The Celtics fan last month tried out for Comcast SportsNet’s Fancaster program, in which the network travels to New England schools and invites teens to audition for a chance to work a game.
Andrews, a Milford High School sophomore, nailed her audition. After trying out with several peers, Andrews learned that day she could give broadcasting a try at the Celtics’ Jan. 3 home game.
Andrews will give a rundown on the Celtics lineup, and her report will be seen after the matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
“I’m extremely nervous,” Andrews said Friday. “What’s broadcasting without nerves?”
She has apparently controlled her nerves on the soccer field.
A midfielder and center, Andrews made first-team all state this past season.
She used to play basketball, but because of scheduling conflicts, she stopped playing so she could concentrate on soccer. She also competes in indoor track.
Comcast SportsNet stopped by the school’s television studio. Andrews read a mock game preview, discussing star Celtics Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
She hopes to someday attend Boston College. The school has a communications program, and Andrews might further pursue broadcasting.
For now, she will focus on high school, athletics and her upcoming television debut.
Andrews will watch the game in the stands. She gave her other free ticket to her brother, Mike. Their parents are also expected to attend.
She hopes her broadcast will be a part of a magical season. She wants the Celtics to win a championship in June and avenge their disappointing loss in the finals last season to the rival Los Angeles Lakers.
What word comes to mind when recalling last season?
“Heartbreak,” she said.
