Shaheen joins colleagues in urging Biden administration to work with Israel to get more humanitarian aid into Gaza

By Staff | Feb 6, 2024

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, joined U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Chris Coons (D-DE), Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and 17 colleagues in a letter to President Biden urging the administration to encourage Israeli officials to take necessary steps to significantly increase urgently needed humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza.

In part, the Senators wrote, “While the scale of the crisis is massive, the humanitarian assistance that is entering Gaza is just a fraction of what is needed to save lives. Since aid operations resumed on October 21, delivery of lifesaving assistance to Gaza continues to be hampered, despite no evidence of Hamas theft or diversion of humanitarian assistance provided via the United Nations or international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).”

Full text of the letter can be found here:

U.S. Senators Tom Carper (D-DE), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Angus King (I-ME), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Ed Markey (D-MA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Tina Smith (D-MN), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Peter Welch (D-VT), Patty Murray (D-WA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) also signed the letter.

In response to the horrific terror attack on October 7, Shaheen swiftly condemned Hamas and called for enduring support for Israel while reaffirming Israels’ right to defend itself and its people. Shaheen recently joined a group of Senators in a letter to President Biden that strongly condemned the brutal attack by Hamas on innocent Israelis on October 7 and urged the United States to work with the Government of Israel to ensure an effective strategy to degrade and defeat Hamas while ensuring the safe return of hostages and continued responsiveness to the needs of civilians in Gaza. She also joined letters calling for the release of the American hostages in Gaza, support for a strong humanitarian response in Gaza and a safe pathway to safety for Americans stuck in Gaza.
