Museum of the White Mountains at Plymouth State University debuts spring 2024 exhibition: Reimagine

By Staff | Jan 20, 2024

The Museum of the White Mountains (MWM) at Plymouth State University (PSU) will debut its spring 2024 exhibition, Reimagine, on Tuesday, January 23. The exhibition, which features the work of 32 New Hampshire-based women artists, explores the role creativity plays in imagining a sustainable future. Each piece of art was created with recycled, reused and repurposed materials, either from the artists’ previous creative works, recovered from the cutting room floor of an art studio or found elsewhere.

Following the opening of the exhibition, a reception featuring light refreshments and brief remarks from Museum of the White Mountains Director Meghan Doherty will be held on Saturday, January 27, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“This exhibition is about taking something that seems like refuse and giving it a new life”, said Doherty. “The artists created the pieces featured in the exhibition by deconstructing and reconstructing previous work, reviving discarded media, repurposing materials and objects and returning to old or unfinished work. In their reimagined forms, these works call on the viewer to rethink the subjective nature of the value we ascribe to everyday objects, the meaningfulness of beauty and the importance of sustainability.”

Reimagine is a collaborative project with the New Hampshire Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA), a national organization promoting the advancement of women in visual arts through educational programs, networking and exhibition opportunities, and others. Featured works include a vibrant composition woven together with repurposed paper scraps of print media, clothing created by sewing 35-milimeter film strips with wire and thread, and a studio clock crafted from dried acrylic paint.

The exhibition is open to the public and will run until Saturday, March 23, 2024. For more information about the exhibition visit, www.plymouth.edu/mwm.
