As National Community Policing Week begins, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), along with U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Gary Peters (D-MI), announced that their bipartisan resolution commemorating National Community Policing Week has passed the U.S. Senate. Shaheen first introduced this resolution in 2017 and it has been passed annually by the Senate on a bipartisan basis. This resolution recognizes the service and sacrifice of the law enforcement community and underscores the importance of community policing. The resolution encourages civilians, law enforcement agencies and public servants to work together to find solutions to improve public safety, strengthen community relationships and build trust.

“Our communities are stronger when law enforcement and citizens develop meaningful local ties to collaborate on improving public safety,” said Senator Shaheen. “This bipartisan resolution recognizes the immense sacrifices police officers make each day while in the line of duty and highlights the need to bolster community policing in order to foster trust and protect our communities. I am proud to see it pass with such strong bipartisan support.”

“National Community Policing Week recognizes the dedication of our men and women in blue who risk their lives every day to keep our neighborhoods safe,” said Senator Cornyn. “This resolution reaffirms our commitment to effective community policing and fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and those they serve.”

“I am glad to join this bipartisan effort to support and honor community policing, which plays a key part in building trust between law enforcement and the public.” Senator Hassan said. “I will continue working across the aisle to support law enforcement in the Granite State.”

As Chair of the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, Shaheen helps secure funding for the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) programs.
