WASHINGTON – In the Communications and Technology Subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02) urged action to prevent online abuse and protect our nation’s most vulnerable users. Kuster, the founder and co-chair of the Bipartisan Task Force to End Sexual Violence, specifically called on her colleagues to reexamine Section 230, the existing legal framework for online service providers that shields them from being held liable for the content on their platforms. “I am deeply concerned about reports of online dating apps being used to commit sexual assaults,” said Kuster. “Online companies should not be allowed to protect predators who are using their platforms to scope out their next victims. It’s past time for Congress to reexamine and modernize Section 230 to make the internet safer for all Americans.”

Kuster is leading the effort in Washington to hold sexual abusers accountable, equip our law enforcement officers with the tools they need to catch these criminals and expand access to support for survivors. Rep. Kuster’s legislation, the END Child Exploitation Act, would make it easier for investigators to identify child sexual abuse images by extending the period of time that companies are required to preserve information about images reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
