U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster

WASHINGTON – Ahead of the second anniversary of the January 6th, 2021, attack on our United States Capitol by former president Donald Trump’s supporters, U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement:

“January 6th, 2021, was a dark day for our country as an armed mob assaulted our seat of government to overturn the results of a free and fair presidential election. Two years later, the threat to our democracy continues. I was both a victim and a witness that day. I can tell you that the armed insurrectionists were terrorists, not tourists. They were not peaceful observers. They were on a mission to undermine our democracy. I escaped the House Gallery less than 30 seconds before the mob reached the same hallway, threatening to harm Members of Congress and disrupt the results of the 2020 presidential election. That is how close we came – not just Members of Congress, but the American people and the future of our democracy.

“As we head into the 118th Congress and witness the chaos that persists in the Republican Party, justice and accountability have never been more important. We cannot forget the horrors of the January 6th insurrection. We cannot allow those who sought to undermine our democracy to get away with their crimes. We cannot forget the brutality of the former president’s supporters or the bravery of our United States Capitol Police and D.C. Police officers. We cannot allow anyone to rewrite history or erase the reality of what happened that day.

“Thanks to the tireless work of the January 6th Select Committee, Americans have seen the truth about what happened that day, who is truly responsible for the violent attack on our democracy, and the steps we must take to ensure this can never happen again. We must continue pushing for justice, for the good of our country and the longevity of our democracy.”
