Shaheen introduces legislation to establish federal standards for energy efficiency in consumer room air cleaners
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) today introduced legislation to establish a federal energy efficiency standard for consumer room air cleaners under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. Air purifiers have recently grown in popularity, particularly consumer room air cleaners to improve indoor air quality during the pandemic and in areas prone to wildfires. This legislation would substantially reduce energy use and provide manufacturers with uniform standards for air cleaners.
“Improving indoor air quality is essential – as demonstrated by the pandemic and communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis. As air cleaners that help households, schools and workplaces strengthen air quality become more common, we must ensure access to quality products at a range of different price points. That’s why I’m introducing legislation to establish energy efficiency standards for room air cleaners,” said Shaheen. “Creating a federal standard for energy efficiency will ensure manufacturers have clear guidance on what standards to meet – ultimately lowering energy consumption as we keep an eye towards investing in a green future.”
