Shaheen, Pappas, Kuster issue statements on House passage of Inflation Reduction Act

By Staff | Aug 13, 2022

U.S. SEN. JEANNE SHAHEEN:

“I’m thrilled this historic bill to lower health care costs, combat the climate crisis and tackle soaring inflation passed Congress today and now heads to the president’s desk to become law. This legislation will make a real difference for Granite Staters, from making health insurance more affordable through ACA tax credits – which I’ve long fought for – to tackling surging prescription drug costs that add pressure on families’ wallets. This legislation also represents the most substantial action to combat the climate crisis in U.S. history by enacting long overdue policies to protect our communities and the environment through sustainable energy solutions,” said Shaheen. “These measures are all paid for without raising a dime from working families, instead holding accountable wealthy corporations who’ve long evaded paying their fair share. I’m proud to have helped make this legislation a reality, and I’m excited for President Biden’s signature so we can deliver urgent relief for working families.”

As a reminder, this once-in-a-generation legislation passed the Senate last weekend and includes investments to:

· Extend key Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which Shaheen originally championed and led through the American Rescue Plan

· Lower the cost of prescription drugs

· Address the surging costs of insulin, which Shaheen has led efforts around as co-chair of the Senate Diabetes Caucus and as the lead sponsor of the bipartisan INSULIN Act

· Combat climate change and prioritize sustainable energy efficiency solutions, including building energy code adoptions she’s championed through her hallmark energy efficiency bill, the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (ESIC)

· Level the playing field by making corporations pay their fair share in taxes and much more.

U.S. REP. CHRIS PAPPAS:

“As I speak to Granite Staters across the First District, nothing is more critical than the need for us to take action to address kitchen table issues and lower everyday costs. I’ve spoken with seniors who have delayed retirement due to high drug costs and families who have had to share prescriptions, ration doses, or cut pills in half because they can’t afford life-saving medications. I’ve met with families who are worried about how they’ll afford heating oil this fall. And I’ve seen firsthand how climate change is impacting not just our environment, but our way of life in New Hampshire through rising temperatures, increased flooding, and stronger storms that have damaged our infrastructure.”

“This legislation takes on the big drug companies to cap prescription drug costs and extends important tax credits to lower health care premiums. It will lower energy costs and ensure we can achieve energy independence while also reducing our emissions. And while we take these important steps forward, this legislation will also reduce our deficit and fight inflation.”

U.S. REP. ANNIE KUSTER

“Granite State families need relief from high prices and this legislation is a step toward addressing some of the costs that have put a burden on folks in New Hampshire,” said Rep. Kuster. “This transformative legislation will lower health care costs for Granite Staters, combat climate change, and strengthen our economy while reducing the deficit and ensuring the wealthiest corporations pay their fair share in taxes. The bill also accomplishes a long-term priority of mine by empowering Medicare to negotiate drug prices – a truly historic step.”

“I’m proud that my bipartisan legislation to support Granite State seniors and lower their health costs – the Protecting Seniors Through Immunization Act – was included in the package we passed today,” Rep. Kuster continued. “This bill will ensure access to life-saving vaccinations for Medicare recipients with no out-of-pocket costs. Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act will have a far-reaching positive impact on millions of Americans for generations to come, and I look forward to the president signing this bill into law.”
