GREENLAND – U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) participated in a discussion with the Lovering Health Center and Planned Parenthood to address what the reversal of Roe v. Wade means for Granite Staters and what abortion services and reproductive health care remain available in New Hampshire. The meeting came on the heels of the Supreme Court’s ruling that reversed nearly 50 years of precedent for access to abortion and comprehensive reproductive health freedoms. The Supreme Court decision has spurred State legislatures throughout the nation to enact strict abortion bans, including those that outlaw abortion almost entirely. Today’s event also comes one day after Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked legislation cosponsored by Shaheen that would protect every woman’s fundamental right to travel across state lines to receive abortion care and protect the providers who care for them.

“As Granite Staters grapple with the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision, it is pivotal to remind New Hampshire women and residents about the services still available to them. Despite the dangerous and disturbing actions of Republicans in New Hampshire and Washington to control women’s bodies and their most private health decisions, we wanted to remind Granite Staters today that providers like Lovering and Planned Parenthood, and lawmakers like those of us in the congressional delegation, will do everything to defend their reproductive rights,” said Shaheen. “In the wake of this disastrous decision, we will leave no stone unturned, in Congress and in coordination with the Biden administration, to find ways to provide women access to safe abortion services and comprehensive reproductive care.”

Shaheen has long sounded the alarm about what’s at stake for women’s freedoms and reproductive health in New Hampshire if the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In May, Shaheen spoke on the Senate floor to urge lawmakers to vote in favor of legislation that would have codified Roe. In March, Shaheen joined Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra in Manchester for a meeting with New Hampshire family planning providers amid continued attacks from State and congressional Republicans. For years, Shaheen has fought to expand coverage of women’s preventative care, including through her legislation to reduce the cost of contraception for servicewomen and dependents in military families.
