Police-involved shooting in Walpole under investigation

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Dec 4, 2021

CONCORD — Authorities said Saturday that an early-morning confrontation outside of a residence in the northern Cheshire County town of Walpole led to a state trooper discharging his firearm and wounding the 26-year-old suspect.

The man, identified as Jacob Gasbarro, was taken to a local hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries, according to a statement from the office of Attorney General John Formella.

The trooper, along with a Walpole officer, responded at 3:09 a.m. to 800 County Road for a report of a suicidal male.

Upon their arrival, “a brief confrontation occurred outside the residence, between Mr. Gasbarro and the responding officers,” according to the statement.

During the confrontation, “the trooper discharged his weapon and wounded Mr. Gasbarro.”

The Walpole officer did not discharge his weapon, according to the statement.

The shot was fired at 3:12 a.m.

Neither of the officers were equipped with body cameras, and there is no known video of the incident, the statement noted.

It didn’t indicate whether Gasbarro was armed with a gun or other weapon, or if the confrontation was verbal or physical.

It did say that no law enforcement officers or other people were physically injured.

Also included in the statement:

“The circumstances surrounding the trooper’s discharge of his weapon remains actively under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit. Per protocol, the names of the officers involved in this incident are being withheld pending each officer’s formal interview.

“It is anticipated that the interviews will be completed during the coming week. Once the interviews are complete, the names of the officers will be released.

“The Attorney General’s role in an officer deadly force investigation is to determine if the officer’s use of deadly force was justified under the law.

“Whether Mr. Gasbarro will face any criminal liability for his conduct is within the Cheshire County Attorney’s purview.

“Thus, the Cheshire County Attorney’s Office will also be reviewing the circumstances of this incident to

determine if criminal charges will be brought against Mr. Gasbarro in connection with the incident.”
