U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan today discussed ways that federal COVID-19 relief funding is supporting Granite Staters and nonprofits during a virtual event hosted by the NH Center for Nonprofits, a statewide association dedicated to providing programs and resources to support nonprofits across New Hampshire. Senator Hassan also thanked the nonprofits on the video call for stepping up and providing vital services during the pandemic to Granite Staters in need.

“The pandemic was a seismic event for our country. It turned lives upside down – forcing new struggles on people all across the state, while also exacerbating long-standing challenges for working families and our most vulnerable communities,” said Senator Hassan. “But in that moment, it’s the leaders on this Zoom who have stepped up to serve those who are most in need.”

Hassan discussed ways that federal COVID-19 relief that she helped pass into law have supported New Hampshire’s nonprofits and the individuals that they serve. The CARES Act created the Paycheck Protection Program, which has provided Granite State businesses and nonprofits with more than $3.6 billion in support. Senator Hassan also discussed relief to individuals through the American Rescue Plan that she worked to pass into law, including to lower the cost of health care through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

Participants and Senator Hassan also discussed the challenges ahead. “As we emerge from the pandemic, we know that the barriers workers face have been exacerbated. To get more people back to work and strengthen our businesses, we need to give them more tools to succeed,” said Senator Hassan.

Hassan took questions on issues including investing in home health care, supporting substance misuse prevention and treatment, and expanding workforce training programs. Senator Hassan recently reintroduced the bipartisan Gateway to Careers Act to expand career pathways programs and provide wrap-around supports for learners who face barriers to completing their education – such as accessing affordable housing or covering transportation costs.
