WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, today met virtually with President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Treasury, Janet Yellen.

“As this pandemic continues to take a heavy toll on Granite Staters and our economy, I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Dr. Yellen to discuss her plans to help expand opportunity and support job creation,” Senator Hassan said. “We discussed the need to build on our recent COVID-19 relief package to continue supporting small businesses and families in the months ahead, as well as the need to foster innovation and support startups to help drive long-term economic growth, including by expanding the research and development tax credit. In addition, we discussed the Treasury Department’s role in helping to disrupt terrorist financing, an issue I have pressed the Trump administration on. I look forward to continue working with the Treasury Department and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to help protect and create jobs, support small businesses, and grow our 21st century innovation economy.”

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Hassan is focused on expanding economic opportunity to hard-working Granite Staters and Americans. The COVID-19 relief package that was recently signed into law includes bipartisan legislation introduced by Senator Hassan to allow eligible small employers to both participate in the Paycheck Protection Program and also claim the Employee Retention Tax Credit to help keep workers on payroll and pay for their health care coverage. Currently, small employers cannot participate in both of these programs. Senator Hassan also introduced bipartisan legislation to support research and development (R&D) investments by innovative small businesses and startups. In addition, Senator Hassan previously pressed the current Treasury Secretary on the Department’s efforts to combat terrorist funding streams.
