WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Bill Cassidy, MD (R-LA), and Michael Bennet (D-CO) released the following statement on the bipartisan House and Senate agreement on a measure to end the practice of surprise medical bills:

“We have heard from constituents time and time again who did everything right when going to the doctor’s office or hospital but were left on the hook for surprise medical bills, sometimes to the tune of thousands of dollars. This is abhorrent and deeply unfair for families in our states of New Hampshire, Louisiana, and Colorado, and across the country. Back in 2019, we teamed up across the aisle and with our colleagues in the House of Representatives to find a solution to end the practice of surprise medical bills. Today’s agreement is a big step forward and reflects much of our work in the STOP Act. We will continue working together to get a bill passed into law this year to address this critical issue facing patients and our constituents.”

Senators Hassan, Cassidy, and Bennet have led efforts to address surprise medical bills. Senators Hassan and Cassidy worked for months with members from both parties to craft the STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act to end this practice. In May of 2019, Senators Hassan and Cassidy joined President Trump at a White House event on the need to address this issue.
