Kuster releases statement on Massachusetts decision to tax Granite Staters working remotely during the pandemic

By Staff | Oct 17, 2020

U.S. Rep Annie Kuster

On Friday, Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02) issued the following statement after the Massachusetts Department of Revenue formally moved to continue to levy a state income tax on New Hampshire residents who are working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Congresswoman Kuster is a cosponsor of legislation in the House to protect New Hampshire residents paying from paying income tax to the state of Massachusetts while working from home.

“I was outraged by today’s rule change from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue which unfairly requires New Hampshire residents who are following public health guidance and working from home to pay income taxes to the state of Massachusetts,” said Kuster. “Many Granite Staters in the Southern Tier were commuting to work in Massachusetts prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have been working from New Hampshire during the ongoing public health crisis. It’s offensive and unfair to require employees who have been working in New Hampshire for months to continue paying income tax to another state.”
