Senate sends Secure Modern Accurate Registration Technology (SMART) Act to Sununu

By Staff | Jun 30, 2020

CONCORD – Today, the Senate voted to concur with the House recommendation of Ought to Pass with Amendment on SB 7, the Secure Modern Accurate Registration Technology (“SMART”) Act. If signed into law, the SMART Act would modernize New Hampshire’s election infrastructure and make registration more accessible to eligible Granite State voters.

SB 7 will next be enrolled with the Secretary of State’s office and then go to the governor’s desk at which time he will have five days to sign or veto or it becomes law without his signature.

After the vote, prime sponsor Senator Melanie Levesque (D-Brookline) issued the following statement:

“The SMART Act is a significant step towards a secure, modern, and accurate registration system that safeguards and improves access to our elections. As the first-in-the-nation state, we have set records for voter participation and highly value the right, and civic duty, of each eligible voter to have their voice heard. I applaud my colleagues in the House and Senate for their work on this important issue and I urge the governor to sign this bill into law.”
