Independent redistricting reform passes Senate

By Staff | Jun 30, 2020

CONCORD – The New Hampshire Senate passed HB 1665, establishing independent redistricting reform, on 15-9 vote. Representative Marjorie Smith (D-Durham), prime sponsor of the legislation, released the following statement:

“For the second time in two years Democrats and Republicans have come together to say that Granite Staters expect fairness in their elections. Previous redistricting efforts have been fueled with partisanship, confusion and secrecy. By passing an independent redistricting commission the process of drawing the districts will be open and fair. In the past, districts have been drawn to give the party in power an advantage in subsequent elections. This bill ensures fairness. We know that people have lost faith in their government and politicians and this bill will help restore that faith.”

“The legislature also heard and addressed the concerns of the governor by making clear that the Independent Redistricting Commission is strictly advisory and therefore no one should raise questions of constitutionality. Granite Staters expect and demand fairness in their elections and there has never been a more important time for their elected leaders to provide it.”
