River Hawk homecoming returns to campus

By Staff | Oct 13, 2021

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell students, generations of alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the university will be reunited in blue on campus this weekend for River Hawk Homecoming.

The public may join in the celebration. Open to all, River Hawk Homecoming will be filled with family-friendly activities from Thursday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 17. The event-packed weekend will showcase campus life and include outdoor festivals, entertainment, athletic events – including men’s ice hockey games on Friday and Saturday night – and more.

UMass Lowell has more than 100,000 living alumni and more than 60,000 of them live in Massachusetts.

“With alumni returning from many of our predecessor institutions, including Lowell Tech, Lowell State and ULowell, this will be a homecoming festival that celebrates what it means to be connected to such a vibrant and successful alma mater,” said Heather Makrez-Allen, an alum and UMass Lowell executive director of alumni and donor relations.

While River Hawk Homecoming will welcome back graduates of all class years, nine classes, each five years apart from 1976 through 2016, will officially mark their reunions. In addition, UMass Lowell will officially reopen its Costello Athletic Center, showcasing its state-of-the-art renovation, and honor the success of the Class of 2020 in a celebratory-inspired event previously delayed due to the pandemic.

Activities open to the public include:

• River Hawk Photo Scavenger Hunt – Friday, Oct. 15, 4 p.m. through noon on Sunday, Oct. 17. This free event asks participants to complete at their own pace photo challenges at various iconic locations across campus. Participants may download a scavenger hunt list from the UML Family Programs website or access it on the UMass Lowell Family Programs Facebook page. Players are asked to follow the instructions for chances to win prizes and may post their finds on social media by tagging @UMLHomecoming and @UMLHunt.

• River Hawk Hockey Opening Night – Friday, Oct. 15, 7:15 p.m., Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell. Fans will return to the stands to watch the home team take on the Long Island University Sharks in the first of two home-and-home games over the weekend. Game tickets are available for purchase online at www.tsongascenter.com.

• Jennifer’s 5K Run/Walk – Saturday, Oct. 16, 10 a.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell. This 5K race runs along both sides of the Merrimack River. Held annually in memory of UMass Lowell graduate Jennifer D’Amour ’98, event proceeds benefit a scholarship fund for UMass Lowell women’s cross-country and track-and-field student-athletes and this year, Greater Lowell Road Runners. Entry fee and registration information is available at www.uml.edu/homecoming/.

• River Hawk Way Pre-Game Festival & Hockey Game – Saturday, Oct. 16, 3 to 6 p.m., Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell back lawn. This free outdoor festival for all ages is filled with carnival games, food, music, pony rides and more. For many, this event will be the lead-up to Saturday night’s hockey game at 7 p.m. against the Long Island Sharks. Game tickets are available online at www.tsongascenter.com.

• Field hockey game against the Long Island University Sharks – Sunday, Oct. 17, 1 p.m., Wicked Blue Field, Costello Athletic Complex, North Campus, 275 Riverside St., Lowell. Fans may cheer on the River Hawks’ winning season at this free game.
