UMass Lowell receives $12M from Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell

By Staff | Oct 7, 2021

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell and the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell (IUAAL) announced today the donation of nearly $12 million to the university to fund student scholarships.

An initial donation of $2.9 million has already been given to the university. The funds, donated to the IUAAL by alumni of UMass Lowell and its predecessor institutions throughout the years, have endowed the association’s decades-long, scholarship program.

“This gift from the Alumni Association will help make it possible for future generations of students to find an easier path to success,” said UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney. “I can’t thank the Association board members enough for taking the initiative to help our students.”

IUAAL Executive Director Margaret Shanahan echoed Moloney’s focus on students.

“It is a privilege to work with the IUAAL Board of Directors and the university leadership to make this donation a reality. Every one of these volunteers has given years of service in stewarding the IUAAL funds and supporting the students at UMass Lowell. Their integrity and dedication is inspiring.”

The agreement, approved by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, sets the stage for the Association to donate an expected nearly $12 million, designated explicitly for student scholarships.

Moloney and Shanahan both praised the decades of alumni who, having achieved success after earning their degrees, reached back to lift future generations of students in perpetuity.

Moloney said the IUAAL will be recognized for its incredible generosity at the university’s annual Celebration of Philanthropy during Homecoming Week in October.
