By Staff | Oct 1, 2021

CONCORD – The University System of New Hampshire (USNH) is saddened to learn of the passing of its former Chancellor, Claire Van Ummersen, Ph.D. Dr. Van Ummersen, who served USNH from 1986 to 1992, was the first woman to serve as its Chancellor and was a strong and vocal advocate for public higher education.

“Dr. Van Ummersen was a visionary leader, role model, and mentor to many higher education executives. Her firm, clear guidance on issues was always intertwined with a genuine interest in each individual with whom she was engaged — establishing lifelong respect and admiration for her accomplishments and style,” said former USNH Chancellor and former New Hampshire Director of Higher Education, Edward R. MacKay, Ed.D., who worked closely with Dr. Van Ummersen during her tenure at USNH.

Dr. Van Ummersen’s accomplishments included creating distinct missions for each of the residential campuses and a statewide distance learning network to serve adult learners that evolved into the online programs prevalent today. Her strong fiscal management allowed USNH to meet all financial aid needs for in-state students while also addressing challenges ranging from deferred maintenance to collective bargaining agreements. New Hampshire was exceedingly fortunate to have such a talented leader.

The University System of New Hampshire (USNH) enrolls 32,000 students and consists of four public institutions: Granite State College, Keene State College, Plymouth State University and the University of New Hampshire. USNH strives to ensure the availability of appropriate and accessible higher educational opportunities throughout New Hampshire and addresses critical state workforce needs. A 29-member Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the University System.
