BG actors put on ‘Glass Menagerie’

By Staff | Mar 27, 2016

BG Drama presented Tennessee Williams’ classic play "The Glass Menagerie" on March 18-19. The four-person cast began rehearsing in January and put on an outstanding show.

The play starred seniors Tom Devereaux as Tom, Shannon Reault as Amanda and Jacob Christie as Jim, as well as sophomore Elizabeth Hannabach as Laura.

Despite being the youngest member of the cast, Hannabach said working with the other three students was a great experience.

"We all got really close over the course of the play," Hannabach said.

Literature teacher Tom Murphy directed the pla,y with assistance from interim teacher Kevin Fanning, one of his former drama students from the Class of 2004.

Murphy helped start the BG drama program about 25 years ago and described "The Glass Menagerie" as a "funny and heartbreaking" play.

"I’m very happy with how it turned out," Murphy said.

As an audience member, I was impressed by the way the cast members "brought out the humor" in the show, as Murphy described it later, while still conveying the subtle emotions that make "The Glass Menagerie" so moving.

The actors were all well suited to their roles and emphasized their characters’ unique traits; they had all clearly put a lot of effort into making their performance as polished as possible.

"With such a small cast, the overall success of the play was heavily dependent on the talent of its actors, and they didn’t disappoint," said sophomore audience member Gabby Paquet.

In the end, the cast members accomplished what they set out to do: put on a great play.

"It’s a beautifully written show," said Devereaux, "and the perfect casting made it all the more impactful."

Holly Boivin is a sophomore at Bishop Guertin High School.
