By Staff | Mar 3, 2016

In January, 88 students in grades 6-8 from 12 schools competed in the 33rd annual Southern New Hampshire Regional MathCounts competition in Bedford.

Taking first-place team honors in a close competition was the Academy for Science and Design in Nashua, coached by Karen Legault and Waiman Long, with team members Amol Khanna, Suhaas Katikaneni, Owen Long, Purushottham Sankarnarayan and Akstay Shinde.

Placing second was Fairgrounds Middle School in Nashua, coached by Vishik Bhalla, with team members Tanisha Asarpota, Joanne Lee, Kenneth Liu and Rubin Zhu.

Third place was awarded to Ross A. Lurgio Middle School in Bedford, coached by Sean Morin, with team members Calvin Ang, Hannah Thomas, Alex Kim and Avery Hudson.

The top four scorers in the individual competition and their coaches were Rubin Zhu and coach Vishik Bhalla, of Fairgrounds Middle School, and Suhaas Katikeneni, Owen Long, coach Waiman Long and Swetha Donepudi, of the Academy for Science and Design.

In addition to the members of the top three teams, Swetha Donepudi, Akhil Kammila and Ananth Rangan, of the Academy for Science and Design, and Kedai Wei, of Hampstead Academy, qualified to represent the region at the State MathCounts competition in March at Plymouth State University. The top four individual scorers and coach of the winning team at the state competition will then get an all-expense-paid trip to the Raytheon MathCounts National Competition in Washington, D.C., in May.

MathCounts is sponsored locally by the New Hampshire Society of Professional Engineers.
