Student at Pelham school takes third place in NH Geography Bee
PELHAM – St. Patrick Catholic School fifth-grader Callum Burgess placed third in the state Geography Bee recently.
The finals were held March 27 at Keene State College.
Callum is the son of Eric and Josalyn Burgess, of Lowell, Mass. He won the school-level Geography Bee in February.
To qualify for the state event, school winners take a test, and the top scorers are invited to the finals. This year, 102 students qualified for the finals.
At the state finals, students are placed into small groups in the first round, where they’re asked 10 questions. The top 10 from the small-group round compete onstage for the final round.
Callum was presented with a Geography Bee medal, a $50 gift certificate and a DVD collection of National Geographic World.
“Callum has checked out every geography book, atlas and ‘Go, Go America’ book in our library at least once since kindergarten,” former SPCS librarian Tracey Gamble said. “He has always been so passionate, respectful of the books and materials, and my No. 1 customer.”
