MICHELLE GOLDSMITH

Michelle Goldsmith, 21, of Amherst, recently completed a semesterlong wilderness expedition traveling in Australia with the National Outdoor Leadership School.

On March 3, Goldsmith and 14 other students traveled to NOLS Australia for an expedition during which they did not have access to modern conveniences and were challenged each day to step outside their comfort zones. A NOLS education stresses leadership can be learned and is based on the belief that the outdoors is a challenging environment where students will learn hard skills and about themselves.

The NOLS spring semester in Australia was split into three sections: canoeing, backpacking and a coastal section; two to three instructors who are experts in the field accompanied students on each section.
