College achievements by Greater Nashua students
Here are college achievements by students from Greater Nashua:
KEENE STATE HONORS CONVOCATION
These local students were honored at Keene State College’s Spring Honors Convocation in May.
Alexander Davis, of Hollis, won the Bruce LeVine Mellion ’69 Scholarship for Excellence in Dance. This award was established to provide recognition, advanced study and research opportunities to an exceptional junior or senior majoring in dance and chosen by the dance department faculty.
Katherine Wadleigh, of Hollis, won the Theatre and Dance Award for Excellence in Theatre Arts. Members of the theatre and dance department recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, creativity and service to the department in the areas of acting, directing, technology and design.
Ashley Cardin, of Hudson, won the Honors in Psychology Award. The academic program of psychology at Keene State has established an honors program to recognize motivated psychology students who have completed a yearlong empirical research project, presented an oral and a written report on their findings, and passed an examination.
Emily Laplant, of Hudson, won the Excellence in Communication Award and the Peter H. Jenkins Management Endowed Scholarship. The communication award recognizes a graduating communication major who has demonstrated excellence and scholastic achievement. The management scholarship was established in 1994 to recognize a senior who plans to continue with graduate studies.
Erin Duffy, of Merrimack, was given the Michael D. Keller Memorial Award. The award was established in 2002 by faculty, staff, students and friends to recognize a student in the visual and performing arts.
Christina Anderson, of Nashua, won the Excellence in Mathematics Education Award. This award is given by the mathematics department to a graduating student who shows potential for leadership in mathematics education and is planning to teach in a K-12 setting. In addition to knowledge of mathematics education, the recipient must also have an awareness of current issues.
COLBY-SAWYER COLLEGE INTERNSHIPS
These local students completed their required internships at Colby-Sawyer College in New London.
Katelyn Milligan, of Nashua, a member of the Class of 2014 majoring in psychology, completed an internship with Granite Hill School in New Hampshire.
Chelsea Gallant, of Nashua, a member of the Class of 2014 majoring in exercise science, completed an internship with Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
Sarah Fremont-Smith, of Hollis, a member of the Class of 2014 majoring in child development, completed an internship with Kearsarge Middle School in North Sutton.
Charles Keeler, of Nashua, a member of the Class of 2015 majoring in sport management, completed an internship with Nashua High School South.
Lesley Frank, of Milford, a member of the Class of 2014 majoring in psychology, completed an internship with Orion House in Newport.
MAGGIE BARA
Maggie Bara, of New Ipswich, a student at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., presented several projects at the school’s 20th annual Undergraduate Symposium.
Bara, a senior, presented “Identification and Characterization of the Morphological, Metabolic, and Mammalian Immune Response to an Unknown Bacterium,” “RAW264.7 Cellular Response to Dermacoccal and Staphylococcal Infection,” “Rhytisma Acerinum: Infection Patterns, Tree Characteristics and Microbial Diversity” and “Macrophage Response to BK polyomavirus infection.”
Her projects ranged from characterizing and determining the identity of an unknown bacterium to investigating how a subset of immune cells known as macrophages respond to infection by two gram-positive cocci bacterial species to studying Rhytisma acerinum, a fungus that infects the leaves of sycamore and maple trees, to studying how a cell line of macrophages responds to BK polyomavirus, which is known to cause kidney destruction in 5-10 percent of renal transplant patients, in order to study the immune response.
MICHAEL SHAHEEN
Michael Shaheen, of Nashua, a member of the Class of 2014 at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass., completed the 2013-14 school year working as a resident assistant. Resident assistants help resident students meet their educational, interpersonal and social needs within their living environments. The RA role is extensive, encompassing community building, programming and helping, as well as administrative and staff responsibilities.
EMILY HARNEDY
Emily Harnedy, a game design major from Merrimack, received recognition during the fourth annual Champlain College Core Division Celebration of Excellence. The ceremony recognizes work in multiple core classes across multiple years. Harnedy received recognition for her work during her Concepts of the Self class.
