Scholarships presented to Greater Nashua students
REGIONAL
PETERS OF NASHUA SCHOLARSHIPS
Peters of Nashua awarded more than $3,000 in scholarship and award money to seniors recently.
Peters held its first college scholarship contest, offering three prize levels ranging from $500-$1,500. Seniors living in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts were asked to submit a 500-word essay about the person or teacher who most influenced their life.
Peters received 158 entries. Peters was so impressed with the quality of entries, it expanded the awards to include four honorable mentions.
The winners were:
FIRST: Alexa Karkhanis, Nashua High School North, $1,500 scholarship from Peters of Nashua. Karkhanis will attend James Madison University.
Karkanis’ essay topic was volunteer work she and a friend did in the oncology unit at St. Joseph Hospital. They designed a cart for the purpose of delivering items to patients that would make them smile. While the cart had only small items, such as hard candies, word games, lotions, reading materials and the like – the kindness of the gesture made huge impacts on the patients. Volunteering on an oncology unit wasn’t easy, and was full of challenges, but it was the kindness and strength of these seriously ill patients that affected Karkhanis’ life forever.
SECOND: Bo Gurskis, Goffstown High School, $1,000. Gurskis will attend Eckerd College.
THIRD: Kelly Gallagher, Newfound Regional High School, Bristol, $500. Gallagher will attend Northeastern University.
HONORABLE MENTION ($100 gift card): Jackie Keleher, Portsmouth Christian Academy at Dover; Kristen Erickson, Manchester Memorial High School; Robert Trujillo, Pembroke Academy; Kayla Cazares, Goffstown High School.
