UMASS LOWELL HONORS
STUDENTS FOR INNOVATIVE IDEAS
The University of Massachusetts Lowell recently awarded $35,000 in seed money to 48 students for winning concepts for businesses, technology and services in the college’s 2014 DifferenceMaker Idea Challenge.
Recipients included:
Xavier Guay, Greenville, majoring in computer engineering, who was a member of the SOS team that won $7,000. Support our Students is a meal-sharing service for students.
Disha Amin, of Hudson, majoring in computer science, who was a member of the TutorTrack team that won $1,000. TutorTrack is a mobile app for tutors and students who want to schedule sessions.
Kiara Cole, of Nashua, majoring in undeclared business, who was a member of the Chat UML team that won $1,000. Chat UML is a website that provides personal assistance to users.
Lisa Jackson of Nashua, majoring in peace and conflict studies, who was a member of the SAT team that won $1,000. Simulated Action Testing is a gaming device to ease students’ anxiety about taking tests.
The seed money will allow the students to continue to develop their concept.
“We’ve told people this is not a traditional business-plan competition but a way to energize our students to work toward solutions,” said Steven Tello, UMass Lowell’s associate vice chancellor of entrepreneurship and economic development, who founded the DifferenceMaker Program in 2012.

Caleb A. Wright, a 2012 graduate of Milford High School and a student at Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., is an Army ROTC cadet involved in cadet language and cultural immersion training – cadets’ first training deployment as a cadet. After a weeklong training session at Fort Knox, Ky., the cadets are deployed to partner nations, where they’re immersed in the local cultures and languages. The cadets will spend three weeks involved in helping with Army missions that range from helping build community projects to teaching English to local children.
EMILY DUTILE
Emily Dutile, of Merrimack, graduated magna cum laude with a degree in computer science from Saint Anselm College in Manchester on May 17, receiving the computer science department’s academic achievement award at convocation.
Dutile earned the Father Ralph G. Cinque, OSB Award in Computer Science for academic excellence and service to the computer science department. During her four years of college, Dutile was an orientation leader welcoming incoming freshmen, played on the club soccer team, was the student government association’s website coordinator and volunteered through the college’s Meelia Center for Community Engagement.
Dutile interned at DEKA Research & Development in Manchester. She was also a technical intern and software developer trainee at Fidelity Investments in Merrimack for two years. She has been accepted into Fidelity’s LEAP Program, a training and development program for recent IT graduates. After training in North Carolina, she will be placed at a Fidelity office full time.
ELIZABETH FORBES
The Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences recently held its annual awards dinner, giving $585,100 to deserving veterinary students and faculty. Among those honored was Elizabeth Forbes, of Nashua. Forbes received a Carl A. Rott Distinguished Graduate Fellowship in recognition of her high academic achievement and leadership. She is the daughter of Thomas Forbes and Cynthia Dunlap, of Nashua.

Maia Barr, a junior at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, was placed on the dean’s list. She also was inducted into Delta Sigma Pi, the second-oldest professional business fraternity in the U.S. Barr is a 2011 graduate of Milford High School. She works for Turnstone Corp., of Milford, and is the daughter of Timothy and Celeste Barr.

Cadence Pentheny, of Litchfield, made the fall 2013 dean’s list at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. She is the daughter of Richard G. Pentheny and Hallie A. Pentheny and is a graduate of Great Bay Community College.
