Amherst Street Elementary in Nashua launches WE CAN program

By Staff | Feb 6, 2014

NASHUA – Amherst Street Elementary School hosted a health and wellness kickoff night for students and their families on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Amherst Street received a grant of about $1,500 from the United Way of Greater Nashua to implement the WE CAN program. WE CAN stands for Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition. The program provides activities and programs that encourage improved nutritional choices, increased physical activity and reduced screen time for children and their families.

The event included a nutrition class led by Awilda Munoz, of the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, in which students and their families made fresh fruit parfait snacks.

Exercise classes also were offered, including CrossFit, led by Katie Scurrah, of OCN CrossFit, of Hudson, and Zumba, led by Shelby Walker-Adams, of Beach Body Coach.

Several local organizations participated, including the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club and Holistic Self-Care Center. More than 70 people attended.

The next step in the program is a series of nutritional classes offered to Amherst Street parents by Munoz.
