Black Heritage Trail of NH announces historic marker

By Staff | Jul 12, 2023

PORTSMOUTH – Join us in celebrating the unveiling of a historical marker honoring Nellie Brown Mitchell and Edward Everett Brown in Dover, New Hampshire. This momentous occasion is part of the Mapping Untold Stories program by the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, aimed at showcasing the Black history of the state and shedding light on the remarkable contributions of Black individuals.

Nellie Brown Mitchell, a Dover native, was an accomplished soprano concert singer, music educator, inventor, and activist. Her brother, Edward Everett Brown, born in Dover as well, was a prominent lawyer and civil rights activist.

To commemorate this event, we are delighted to have singer Jennifer Rachele perform songs by Nellie Brown Mitchell. Ms. Rachele, a Haitian American artist from Brooklyn, NY, possesses a profound appreciation for music, theater, and the transformative power of words.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 1pm, when the unveiling will take place. Before the ceremony, there will be a captivating tour of Dover’s Black history sites, led by BHTNH Tour Guides Todd Warfield and Nur Shoop. The tour will commence at 12:00pm (noon), meeting at the Dover Friends Meeting House located at 141 Central Ave. Our exploration will culminate at Pine Hill Cemetery, where the marker will be unveiled. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to visit the Woodman Museum to view a display of historic memorabilia related to the Brown family. Refreshments will be provided at the Dover Friends Meeting House. Additionally, DREAM, a group established at Dover High School to address a racial incident, will exhibit the NAACP Youth Council traveling mural highlighting Nellie Brown Mitchell.
