Nashua Garden Club invites the community to ‘Discover the Fascinating World of LICHENS – They’re All Around Us!’

By Staff | Jan 21, 2023

The Nashua Garden Club invites the public to attend its February program, “Discovering the fascinating World of LICHENS – They’re All Around Us!” to be presented by botanist-biologist Bruce Lund. This educational and intriguing session will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 1, at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester St., Nashua. Attendees will gain entry into the wild world of lichens that surrounds us as we step out of our own doors. Lichens come in many colors, sizes, and forms. While they are sometimes plant-like, lichens are not plants.

As a botanist-biologist, guest speaker Bruce Lund will walk attendees through the local world of lichen including species that exist in our own Nashua area. During his work at the Cape Cod National Seashore and as the director of nature centers in Massachusetts, Georgia, Nebraska, Long Island, and Nevada, Mr. Lund studied and photographed many types of plants including flowering plants, mosses, and liverworts, along with insects (especially dragonflies and damselflies), birds, and other various mammals. Now “retired,” he and his wife reside in Nashua NH. His current project is to conduct a survey of the lichens at the Beaver Brook Association in Hollis.

Attendees of this session will learn what lichens are, how they vary from other plants and plant-like organisms and will get introduced to many local varieties. All are welcome. Light refreshment will be served.
