Post 8641 to assist with Winter Carnival

By Staff | Feb 13, 2021

The Merrimack VFW Post 8641 has been assisting veterans in the community since 1961.

The Post recently announced upcoming community activities with Merrimack Parks and Recreation’s Winter Carnival, set for Feb. 20 at Wasserman Park.

The Post is teaming up with Merrimack Scout Pack 525, and will be in attendance with the Daniel Webster Council mobile unit. There will be many fun activities and games for children of all ages. Check the Merrimack Parks and Recreation website at https://merrimackparksandrec.org/winter-carnival for pre-registration due to COVID precautions.

Merrimack VFW Post 8641 holds a special account for assisting veterans, their spouses, widows and orphans. This account is called the Veteran’s Aid Relief Fund. This past year has been difficult for many in our community; however, some more than others. One member of Post 8641 recently lost his home from fire the day before Thanksgiving 2020. This is a tremendous hardship to endure. Working with other agencies, the VFW Post has bettered this veteran’s life, but there is still a need for more. The Relief Fund derives its funds from “Poppy Drive” donations and other small fundraisers; however, this year there is not enough funds to go around.

Merrimack VFW Post 8641 also has joined forces with Marine veteran and small business owner Matt Keller to have a fun day and help raise some relief funds.

Keller is the owner of Axe Play in Hudson. He is a Marine Corps veteran and prior law enforcement officer, so he also takes pride in doing what he is able to assist the community and other veterans in need.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Feb. 28, patrons can visit Axe Play and see VFW representatives there with information to assist the community.

The cost of the event is $20 per person per hour and 50% of all proceeds benefit the VFW Veteran’s Relief Fund.

It is because of joint efforts such as this that the VFW is able to assist veterans in crisis; especially during these difficult times.
