When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, the Nashua Choral Society canceled in-person rehearsals as well as its March 2020 concert, ‘Celebrating Haydn,’ for the safety of its members and audiences. Summer sings also were canceled for the best interest of everyone. Determined to keep the chorus together, NCS board members, music director Dr. Daniel Roihl and accompanist Justin McCarthy worked together throughout the summer months to create an online virtual singing system for the fall semester. September arrived and NCS members received notice that the fall semester would take place online via Zoom. Seeing everyone together again in this virtual format brought joy and optimism to the chorus. Singing rehearsals took place, members stories were shared, computer skills were learned and the membership camaraderie along with musical education continued. Wishing for safe in-person singing with the holidays approaching, the ‘driveway choir’ system was discovered by NCS board members; a new way to celebrate the joy of singing. Thanks to a generous NHCF grant, NCS was able to purchase the equipment needed for this outdoor choir, including wireless microphones. On Dec. 13 (World Choral Day) chorus members were able to gather in person (remaining in their cars) for a socially distanced, drive-in carol sing. Tuning in to the same radio station and singing with the wireless microphones, members could participate as well as hear the carols they were singing. Roihl conducted on a high platform for all to see, and McCarthy social distanced with his keyboard. Seeing everyone in person, even through car windows, was a joyful event. NCS looks forward to hosting more socially distanced sings in the new year. The NCS spring semester will continue via Zoom.
