Amherst cancels July Fourth fireworks show
AMHERST – Due to the the continued risk of the pandemic, the town of Amherst has made the decision to cancel this year’s 4th of July fireworks event, according to the Amherst Fourth of July committee.
This follows the cancellation other major independence day events, including the annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular and concert on the Charles River Esplanade.
Instead, the Pops will present, “A Boston Pops Salute to Our Heroes” a pre-recorded broadcast that will carry the orchestra’s fourth of July tradition and honor those who lost their lives during the COVID-19 crisis. The broadcast will air on Boston’s WHDH station on July 4 at 8 p.m.
With the Amherst Fourth’s committee announcement, an alternative date of July 31 or August 1 was discussed but has been determined to not be an option.
“While we miss our annual community festivities as well as the chance to incorporate additional celebrations this year as planned- the recognition of our graduating high school seniors, health care workers and teachers – the safety of our citizens is paramount,” members of the committee said. “Our thanks to the Amherst to the Amherst Fourth of July committee and everyone involved for their flexibility and preparedness during these uncertain times.”
The Amherst Parks and Recreation department has announced the opening of the town beach at Baboosic Lake, where residents can enjoy the water and warm temperatures daily from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Activities available include a swim area, kayak and paddle board rental, a launch for personal boats, boat storage (for Amherst residents only), charcoal grilling stations and swim lessons.
“There are many safety procedures in place there,” APRD program coordinator Rachel O’Sullivan said. “With offering swim lessons, we’ve determined a way that meets guidelines and is socially distant.”
