‘MIXING FACT AND FICTION’

“Mixing Fact and Fiction,” a talk by WHDH reporter and author Hank Phillipi Ryan, will be held at 7 p.m. May 23 in the NPL Theater. Her book, “The Other Woman,” will be available for sale and signing.

SUMMER HOURS

Starting May 26 until after Labor Day, the library will be closed on Sundays.

‘GROUNDBREAKING READS’

The Nashua Public Library’s first program of the adult summer reading program, “Groundbreaking Reads,” will be held at 7 p.m. May 28 in the library’s theater. Event begins with a screening of “A Community of Gardeners,” an hourlong documentary about the value of community gardens. Then join Gate City Community Gardens for a Q-and-A about community gardens in downtown Nashua, and a seed swap. Bring your extra vegetable, flower and herb seeds or seedlings to give away, and pick up some to bring home. Include a short written description of what they are and how to grow them. Free.

LIBRARY TO ANNOUNCE NASHUA READS TITLE ON JUNE 1

The Nashua Public Library will announce the title of the 2013 Nashua Reads: One City, One Book selection on June 1. Beginning at noon that day, library cardholders can check out copies of the book, including large print, audio on CD and downloadable audiobook editions. Book club kits containing multiple copies also will be available for checkout.

The goal of the One City, One Book program is to get as many Nashuans as possible to read the same book and talk about it with friends, co-workers and neighbors. Thanks to funding from the Friends of the Nashua Public Library and the Ella Anderson Trust, the book’s author will make an appearance at the library on Oct. 25.

SPRING BOOK RETREAT AT NASHUA LIBRARY

On June 1, get away for a day to talk about “The Weight of Water” by Anita Shreve, watch the film inspired by the book and then compare the two. The discussions will be led by Southern New Hampshire University literature instructor Lisa Allen. Copies of the book will be available for borrowing in advance of the event. Preregistration required. The event runs from 10 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Lunch will be served, compliments of the Tamposi-Nash Real Estate Group. During the course of the day, the library will announce the title of the 2013 Nashua Reads book, and participants will be the first to have the opportunity to check out a copy. The library will also kick off its Adult Summer Reading program that day, and participants will be able to sign up on the spot.

TEEN MUSICIANS WANTED

The Nashua Public Library is looking for teen musicians to perform for a crowd of more than 100 at the 2013 Teen Summer Reading outdoor kickoff concert at 6:30 p.m. June 25. Anyone interested in performing should email teens@nashualibrary.org by May 24 listing the following: band name; ages of members; description of your music; name, email and phone number; school; and link to a music sample.

‘DUKE ELLINGTON AND THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE’

Singer/storyteller Nanette Perrotte will explore the storied career of Duke Ellington, one of America’s great band leaders and composers, at 7 p.m. May 29. Through singing and playing the Duke’s signature songs and telling his story, Perrotte illuminates the social history of those times.

BOOK SALE

The library and Friends of the Library will hold their June Book Sale from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 1 and 1-3 p.m. June 2. Saturday prices range from 25 cents-$1 and Sunday has bargain pricing of $2-$5 per bag (depending on the size). Some of the sale items have recently been withdrawn from the library collection, while others have been donated by community members. Donations will be accepted through May 30. The Friends will also sell their new book bags and raffling off a basket of crafting books and supplies.

‘DISSENT AMONG THE PURITANS’

The library, with funding from the N.H. Humanities Council, will present “Dissent Among the Puritans” at 7 p.m. June 5. The year is 1637. Ann Vassall, wife of William Vassall of Essex, England, one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Co., welcomes you to your new home in the Bay. Her words of advice and narration of events going on in town might make you wish you had stayed in England or looked toward New Hampshire or Connecticut as a place of settlement. Living historian Linda Palmer follows up her portrayal of Ann Vassall with a colorful slide presentations that shatters some of our commonly held stereotypes about the Puritans and chronicles the dissent of her husband, who was despised by minister and magistrate alike for his liberal ideas about civil liberty and religion. This program is suitable for adults and teens. Registration is advised.

‘THE WORK OF 1000’

“The Work of 1000,” a 30-minute documentary providing a gripping profile of citizen activist Marion Stoddard, will be shown at 7 p.m. June 12 in the Keyes Room. After the film, Stoddard will speak about what local citizens can do to help complete the vision of the Nashua River Watershed Association’s Nashua River Greenway Program, which aims to permanently protect a corridor along both banks of the Nashua River, its main tributaries and its smaller streams. Free.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY MEETING

The Friends of the Daland Memorial Library will meet at 7:30 p.m. May 27. The agenda will include the tallies from the book, plant, “junque jewels” and lemonade sales held during the Spring Gala on May 18. Discussion on where to direct the proceeds will follow. An update of the children’s summer reading program and other summer activities will be discussed. President Bruce Schmidt will preside. New members are always welcome. BOOK DISCUSSION FOR ADULTS

Copies of the book are available at the library. The group usually meets once a month at 9:30 a.m. for up to two hours. Participants take turns bringing a light refreshment. No attendance requirement – attend discussions that are of interest. The library buys a copy of each selection that may be checked out by patrons when the book isn’t reserved for the discussion. June 3: “The Big House: A Century in the Life of an American Summer Home” by George Howe Colt (nonfiction).
