Dartmouth-Hitchcock infectious disease physician recognized for leadership through COVID-19 by New Hampshire Hospital Association

LEBANON – Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center’s (DHMC) Chief Quality Officer, Michael S. Calderwood, MD, MPH, has been honored with the 2021 Medical Staff Award by the New Hampshire Hospital Association.
“I am very honored to have been selected to receive this award from the Hospital Association, and humbled to have been nominated by colleagues I deeply respect,” Calderwood said. “Our entire organization, however, deserves recognition and praise for their combined efforts to combat COVID-19. I am immensely thankful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing team across the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system. It is through the dedication of our people and our community that we will overcome this pandemic. We are truly stronger together.”
The Medical Staff Award is given annually to a highly regarded in New Hampshire medical staff member who exemplifies excellence in healthcare and brings credit to their institution and community, contributes to the effectiveness and efficiency of their institution, is held in high regard by peers and colleagues, and actively participates in civic and community affairs on behalf of their institution.
“While already a much-respected infectious disease specialist in our medical community, Dr. Calderwood has distinguished himself as a leader at his hospital and health system, the state and the region,” said Steve Ahnen, president of the New Hampshire Hospital Association. “From holding weekly information sessions to leading COVID-19 vaccination efforts, he has been at the forefront of all policy development and educational efforts and is consulted regularly for his expert guidance.”
In addition to these accomplishments, Calderwood helped host an incredibly important and well-attended meeting on COVID-19 with Dr. Anthony Fauci, has given numerous interviews to local and national media to disseminate factual and timely data on the pandemic, and appeared in multiple COVID-19 video updates for the health system.
“At least daily, and often several times daily, ‘Ask Michael’ is a phrase heard across our health system,” said Susan A. Reeves, EdD, RN, CENP, Executive Vice President of DHMC. “He ‘meets people where they are’ in terms of their knowledge and understanding and has a good sense of humor, which has carried him through some understandably challenging situations in the last 18 months.”
