NASHUA – Most seventh and eighth grade students may know a bit about saving money, but the 60 seventh and eighth graders at World Academy in Nashua are learning about personal finance and banking from real-life bankers thanks to Millyard Bank’s new ‘Millyard Bank University’ educational series.

“We are excited to launch this first program of our ‘Millyard Bank University’ series with the students of World Academy,” said Frank Teas, President and CEO of Millyard Bank. “A strong foundation in financial literacy is an important life skill for everyone, and helping younger students understand these important concepts, such as borrowing and credit, before they venture off to college, is invaluable.”

The 12-week financial literacy program, presented by Teas, Vice President and Director of Business Banking, Christina Ladue; and Vice President and Director of Credit Administration, Aaron Gill, will not only provide students with practical experience with savings and checking accounts, but will also delve into borrowing, the significance of credit scores, what banks are and their purpose in society, and the banking industry as a career path. The students will be divided into three groups which will each participate in a four-week session.

“Millyard Bank’s financial literacy program dovetails well with our experiential, real-world learning model focused on helping students gain life and career skills through the ‘four Cs’ of creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration,” said Lisa Dias, Ph.D., Head of School at World Academy. “Learning how and why to save or invest money, and how to balance a checking account are all important concepts for students to understand. And learning about the banking industry first-hand from people who are in it is an exciting way for our students to explore future career options in banking and finance.”

World Academy aims to parlay this year’s financial literacy program into a 12-week elective course open to all students in the future.

World Academy Co-Principals Marie Kirk and Sri Sankar said their students are excited about this program, and expressed their appreciation to Millyard Bank for partnering with the school to offer it.

Millyard Bank’s vision for ‘Millyard Bank University’ is to offer educational opportunities around personal and business finance to the community through various programs and activities.

“As a community bank, we take seriously our responsibility to serve our community,” said Teas. “Providing our neighbors with knowledge and skills to achieve financial success is one of the more gratifying ways we can do so.”
