Nashua 20/20 Emerging: Sanders Burstein, ready to respond at work and in the community
As medical director of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Nashua, Dr. Sanders Burstein is often lauded for overseeing the development of a green, state-of-the-art medical facility that opened in 2012.
But the doctor’s good work takes place outside those walls, too.
He has served on the board of directors for more than half a dozen local nonprofits and clubs, and in 2012, he was named volunteer medical director of the Greater Nashua Medical Reserve Corps, an organization created to respond to emergencies and public health needs in an 11-town region.
Burstein has been a practicing physician in Greater Nashua since 1984, when he joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock at its then-new site in Milford. He remained with Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Milford Family Practice, serving for more than a decade as chairman of the department of family medicine, until he was tapped to serve as medical director in Nashua in 2003.
As medical director, Burstein oversees an 80-provider medical group.
He’s responsible for directing the mission and vision of the group, and promoting safety and quality. In recent years, he led the planning and development of Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s 150,000-square-foot Nashua facility. He sought feedback from everyone from patients to staff on the building’s design and delivery of medical care.
In addition to that role, Burstein is medical director of The Elms Care and Rehabilitation Center in Milford, a long-term care facility.
He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in geriatrics. Burstein, a father of four who lives in Amherst with his wife, has served on the boards of directors for Nashua-based Gateways Community Services, the Greater Nashua Healthy Community Collaborative, Nashua Tobacco Free Coalition, the Endowment for Health, and Congregation Betenu, a reform synagogue in Amherst. He’s also served on boards of the Amherst Soccer Club, the Granite Statesmen Barbershop Chorus and the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce, too.
