United Way seeks volunteer tutors
NASHUA – United Way of Greater Nashua’s Learn United program is seeking volunteer tutors and session monitors to help students in grades K-12 build academic skills, confidence and a love of learning.
Learn United connects adult volunteers with students who can benefit from extra support in reading, math, science, homework help, and other subject areas. Volunteers can choose the age group, subject area and schedule that best fit their interests and availability.
The program is currently seeking tutors for students across all subjects, with a particular need for volunteers who are patient, flexible and willing to support neurodivergent students, including those with anxiety, autism, dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
“We know that a little extra support can make a big difference in a child’s educational journey,” said Samantha Cassista, the United Way’s director of Corporate Sponsorships. “Our volunteers help students gain confidence, strengthen academic skills and reach their full potential.”
Sometimes the greatest impact is not reflected in a grade or test score. Learn United volunteers have seen students arrive at their first session feeling discouraged or unsure of themselves, only to become more confident and engaged over time. For many students, the routine of having another caring adult consistently show up, encourage them, and celebrate their progress is just as important as the academic support they receive.
Many Learn United participants have remained in the program for years, making steady gains in both skills and self-confidence. Volunteers play an important role in that success by providing encouragement, stability, and personalized support that helps students stay motivated and engaged.
Volunteer tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with students, either in person or virtually. No teaching certification is required. Individuals with educational experience are welcome, but anyone who enjoys working with young people and wants to make a positive impact is encouraged to apply.
The program is also recruiting session monitors, who provide a second adult presence during tutoring sessions. This role helps maintain a safe and supportive environment and is a great opportunity for volunteers who want to support students without serving as tutors.
Most tutoring sessions take place after school, with some opportunities available during school hours or on weekends. In-person sessions may be held at community partner locations including the Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA, the Nashua Police Athletic League, Girls Inc., the Nashua Public Library, the Salvation Army and the United Way of Greater Nashua.
Volunteers can choose a flexible schedule and may serve for a few sessions, a semester, or the full school year. All volunteers are required to complete an annual background check.
