NASHUA – The American College of Surgeons recently recognized St. Joseph Hospital as a national Level 3 trauma center.

According to the ACS, a Level 3 trauma center “provides definitive care to patients with mild to moderate injuries, allowing patients to be cared for closer to home. These centers also have processes in place for the prompt evaluation, initial management and transfer of patients whose needs might exceed the resources available.”

Since Jan. 1, all Level 3 trauma centers in New Hampshire were required to be certified by the ACS, according to the state’s trauma system plan. Prior to receiving the national recognition, the trauma center had been operating as a state-designated Level 3 facility since 1995.

“Achieving American College of Surgeons verification with zero deficiencies is an extraordinary accomplishment and a testament to the dedication of our entire trauma team,” said hospital President John Jurczyk. “This recognition demonstrates that our patients can count on receiving nationally recognized, evidence-based trauma care right here in our community. We are incredibly proud of every physician, nurse, EMS partner and staff member whose commitment made this possible.”

During the rigorous evaluation process, the ACS Review Team rated the trauma center in eight categories ranging from performance improvement and patient safety to leadership and staffing.

The Review Team found that the trauma center was in compliance with all the standards required for Level 3 certification. The facility was lauded for its robust trauma program and for its steadfast commitment to providing excellent care to trauma patients.

“This achievement reflects years of dedication from an extraordinary multidisciplinary team committed to providing the highest standard of trauma care,” said Trauma Medical Director Dr. Kristin Raven. “Most importantly, it gives our community confidence that nationally recognized trauma care is available close to home, backed by a culture of continuous improvement and patient safety.”

The certification will remain valid until 2029.
