NASHUA – It was on June 15, 1776 that New Hampshire became the first colony to declare its independence, draft a constitution and send delegates to the Constitutional Congress to vote for national independence.

Now, 15 days shy of the semiquincentennial of that eventful moment, author William Fahey will be discussing his new book, New Hampshire and Independence: Rediscovered Writings from the Sons of the American Revolution.

He will be at Balin Books in Somerset Plaza at 3 p.m. on May 31. This event is free and all are welcome.

Through six powerful essays drawn from the archives of the Sons of the American Revolution, Fahey highlights the state’s early defiance of British authority, its bold seizure of military supplies, its large contribution of troops to key battles like Bunker Hill and its early declaration of independence and a constitution. This richly researched volume brings to life the courage, leadership, and enduring impact of New Hampshire’s patriots in forging the nation. Fahey is the president of Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack and historian of the New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
