DUBLIN — Yankee Publishing, Inc., the longtime producer of several major national publications, including Yankee Magazine and The Old Farmer’s Almanac, has named Ernesto Burden as president and CEO.
An experienced leader within YPI, Burden assumed the role on March 2, succeeding longtime CEO Jamie Trowbridge, who retired after 38 years with YPI, 25 of which were as president and CEO.
Burden brings more than 30 years of experience to his new role, starting as a journalist at small community newspapers and advancing through leadership positions where he diversified business models and introduced new technologies to traditional print publications.
“I’m honored, and thrilled, to have been chosen as YPI’s CEO during such a crucial time for our industry,” Burden said. “The media landscape is changing faster than it ever has, and I’m committed to ensuring we not only keep pace but lead with creativity, integrity, and an unwavering focus on our readers. As an employee‒owned company, our strength comes from the people who build this organization every day, and I look forward to ensuring all employee owners feel they have a voice in the decisions being made.”
Before he was appointed CEO, Burden served as vice president and publisher of YPI’s New Hampshire Group, overseeing strategic direction and operations of YPI’s New Hampshire publications and websites, including New Hampshire Magazine and NH Business Review. He spearheaded the relaunch and growth of the group’s custom publishing division, Yankee Custom Marketing, launched new publications and events and strengthened the financial position of the group.
His broad publishing background includes vice president of digital for Newspapers of New England; group publisher for PennWell’s Military and Aerospace Electronics, Avionics Intelligence, Avionics Europe, Lightwave, and Broadband Technology Report publications and events; new media director for Vermont’s Rutland Herald/Barre-Montpelier Times Argus; online editor at The Nashua Telegraph; and editor of the Cape May Star and Wave in New Jersey.
In addition to Yankee Magazine and The Old Farmer’s Almanac, YPI’s publications include New Hampshire Magazine, NH Business Review, New Hampshire Home, New Hampshire Bride, 603 Diversity and Family Tree Magazine.
Burden earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1994. He serves on the board of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, the Palace Theatre Trust and the Center for Ethics in Society at Saint Anselm College. He previously served on the board of the New England Associated Press News Executives Association and the Resource Development Committee for Catholic Charities New Hampshire.
Burden’s appointment also marks another significant change in the leadership of YPI. Trowbridge was the third generation in his family to be CEO of YPI, named in 2000. His grandfather, Robb Sagendorph, founded YPI with his wife, Beatrix, in 1935. In 2019, Trowbridge and family shareholders sold YPI to its employees through the creation of an employee stock ownership program, keeping YPI independent.
