NASHUA — A bright red banner now hangs over Main Street in recognition of the “exceptional care and compassion” from Southern New Hampshire Medical Center to members of Nashua Fire Rescue following the Feb. 2 gas explosion and four-alarm fire at 440 Amherst St.

Three of Nashua’s bravest were treated at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center following the blaze.

Fire Chief Steven Buxton was joined by Cy Hebert, president of IAFF Local 789, and firefighter Steven Phillips, president of the Nashua Firemen’s Relief Association in sending a letter of appreciation to the hospital.

“In our profession, we often speak about the concept of ‘first responders,'” they said. “While our members arrive on scene first, it is you standing ready in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and throughout your specialized and supporting teams, who continue that response with skill, compassion and unwavering commitment when it matters most.”

Buxton, Hebert and Phillips agreed that the Amherst Street fire was one of the greatest challenges that Nashua Fire Rescue has ever encountered.

“Your teams met our members with not only exceptional clinical skill, but with humanity, kindness and compassion that will never be forgotten,” they said. “The calm professionalism of your Emergency Department, the vigilance and expertise of your Intensive Care Unit and the countless quiet acts of compassion carried out by your staff made a profound difference in the lives of our members and their loved ones.”

Buxton, Hebert and Phillips said the hospital staff acted in ways that exceeded standard medical care.

“There is a unique bond between those who respond to emergencies whether on the street, in the firehouse or within the walls of a hospital,” they said. “In those critical hours and days, that bond was evident in every interaction. We are incredibly proud and grateful to stand alongside you as partners in service to this community. Please know that your efforts did not go unnoticed.”
