SALEM, Mass. – Darrell Lavoie, 59, of Nashua, has been identified as the alleged attacker in a sexual assault that reportedly took place in Peabody, Mass. on the morning of Nov. 12, 1991.

According to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, the victim returned home from work to find Lavoie hiding in her home. He then crept up from behind, blindfolded her and raped her at knifepoint.

The DA’s Office stated that the Massachusetts State Police are “reinvestigating the case and analyzing previously collected evidence.” In June, investigators collected DNA samples from individuals identified during the investigation who did not have DNA profiles. Lavoie’s sample reportedly matched the DNA evidence collected from the crime scene.

Lavoie has been charged with aggravated rape, rape, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon as well as breaking and entering.

He appeared in court on Nov. 17 and is being held on a $100,000 bail. Lavoie has also been ordered to remain in Massachusetts and to have no contact with the victim or with any witnesses.

He is scheduled to be back in court on Jan. 9, 2026.

Under Massachusetts General Law, if convicted, Lavoie could face up to 50 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
