Volunteers needed for free IRS-certified tax preparation in Nashua and Hudson
NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and local organizations, is gearing up to provide free IRS-certified tax preparation for residents starting in February 2026.
This program is made possible by the dedication of trained volunteers. Additional volunteers are needed for the upcoming tax season, particularly in Hudson.
Last year, volunteers prepared more than 1,000 tax returns, generating more than $1 million in refunds for low-income families.
Volunteers assist taxpayers through both the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs. They help prepare tax returns, identify credits and ensure residents receive the maximum benefits.
The VITA program assists residents earning $64,000 or less, those with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
The TCE program focuses on taxpayers ages 60 and over and addresses tax issues unique to seniors.
No prior experience is required as volunteers will receive full IRS training and certification.
All taxpayers are entitled to this free service with the exception of higher-income filers, generally those earning more than $100,000, whose returns require alternative tax calculations or specialized forms that are considered out of the program’s purview.
The Hudson locations are in need of additional volunteers to ensure every taxpayer has access to this free, essential service.
Appointments for taxpayers begin in January 2026 and volunteers are needed now to get ready for the season.
