NASHUA – Ryan DuVarney, a 2025 graduate of Nashua High School South, was awarded a gold medal in architectural drafting during the SkillsUSA Championships last month in Atlanta.

“Receiving the gold medal on stage is still playing in my mind, a truly unforgettable and unexpected experience,” said DuVarney.

He said the competition, which was held on June 25-26, included a written test and specifications to build a house.

“We had about seven hours to complete the house and all of its respective drawings,” said DuVarney.

He is planning to continue his architecture studies this fall at Texas Tech University.

“One of my favorite things about architecture is the creative freedom you have while creating a building or home,” said DuVarney. “My dream is to design log cabin style homes out west in Colorado and Montana.”

SkillsUSA Executive Director Chelle Travis said more than 6,500 students participated in the 114 competitions at this year’s SkillsUSA Championships. Other disciplines included robotics, automotive technology, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. The largest set of skill competitions in the world, the SkillsUSA Championships spans 1.79 million square feet, the equivalent of 31 football fields.

“This showcase of career and technical education demonstrates SkillsUSA at its finest,” said Travis. “Our students, instructors and industry partners work together to ensure that every student excels. This program expands learning and career opportunities for our members.”

More than 1,200 judges were on hand to evaluate the contestants. The judges were joined by industry leaders from 850 corporations, trade associations and unions.

A total of 1,250 gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded at the conclusion of the competitions. Those participants who received a medal also received a Skill Point Certificate which can be added to their employment portfolio.
