NASHUA – Having dedicated nearly 20 years to Nashua Fire Rescue, Firefighter Al Monaco was named Firefighter of the Year during VFW Post 483 Loyalty Day on May 4.
Chief Steven Buxton said Monaco’s “life of service” began when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served from 1993 to 1997 and reached the rank of sergeant.
“During his time in the Marines, Al demonstrated the leadership, discipline and integrity that would come to define his career and his character,” said Buxton.
Following his four years with the Marines, Monaco turned his attention to the New Boston Fire Department.
“His goal was to gain some experience and exposure to the fire service while taking classes to earn the certifications he needed to begin his career,” said Buxton.
In 2008, Monaco graduated from the New Hampshire Fire Academy and joined the Goffstown Fire Department where he would remain for two years.
In 2010, Monaco finally landed his dream job as he joined the ranks of Nashua’s bravest.
“Throughout his career, Al has been a stalwart presence and a shining example to his peers,” said Buxton. “His skills, abilities and relentless work ethic have earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues at every level. Al is particularly known for his unwavering commitment to physical fitness. Many a young firefighter has tried to keep up with him and many have failed. Only to be picked up, coached, shown a different way and provided direction by Al.”
For more than 10 years, Monaco has served on one of the city’s most active engine and ladder companies, the Amherst Street Fire Station.
“Al’s immense company pride is evident in everything he does, from his tireless work ethic to the personal time and resources he invests in making the Amherst Street Station a model for firehouses everywhere,” said Buxton. Though a man of few words, Al lets his actions speak volumes. The message he delivers is clear: Give 100 percent effort to the job, challenge yourself every day and strive to be better than the day before.”
