United Way seeks 100 volunteers for annual Kevin Slattery Memorial Food Drive
NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua is calling on community members to step up and help fight hunger by volunteering at the annual Kevin Slattery Memorial Food Drive on May 31 and June 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Held in honor of longtime United Way board member Kevin Slattery, this event mobilizes the community to collect food for local pantries serving people in need across Greater Nashua.
This year, the drive will be held at 10 local stores each day in Nashua, Hudson, Merrimack, Milford and Wilton–including Shaw’s in Nashua, Milford and Merrimack, Hannaford in Nashua and Hudson, Jeanotte’s Market in Nashua and House By the Side of the Road Convenience Store in Wilton.
To make the drive a success, the United Way needs 100 volunteers–50 each day–to collect food donations from shoppers at these locations. Volunteers will be stationed outside stores, handing out wish lists and encouraging shoppers to purchase a few extra items. The three-hour shifts are perfect for individuals, families, school groups, businesses and faith communities.
Most-needed items include nonperishable foods like canned soup, pasta, tomato sauce, peanut butter, rice, crackers, coffee as well as basic hygiene products like shampoo and toothpaste.
“This is a powerful opportunity for neighbors to come together and tackle a serious local problem–hunger,” said Michael Apfelberg, president of the United Way of Greater Nashua. “Kevin Slattery believed in taking action to help people in need and this drive is a chance for all of us to carry that legacy forward.”
Food collected will support 10 local food pantries serving thousands of individuals and families each month. From children receiving weekend meals through End 68 Hours of Hunger to seniors and veterans accessing emergency food at neighborhood pantries, every donation helps feed someone in the community.

“In New Hampshire, nearly 94,000 people struggle with food insecurity, including more than 21,000 children,” said Apfelberg. “This food drive is about more than collecting food–it’s about standing together to ensure no one in our community goes hungry.”
