LITCHFIELD – John Burke, 19, of Hudson, was taken into custody on April 30 for his alleged involvement in a motor vehicle crash in Litchfield resulting in the death of Jeffrey Day, 57, of Londonderry.

According to the Litchfield Police Department, officers and medical personnel responded to the scene on Rt. 102 at approximately 9:17 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Day lying motionless on the side of the road and his motorcycle in the woods. He continued to be unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the investigation, police determined that Burke, who was driving a Toyota Corolla, was intoxicated at the time of the crash and struck Day’s motorcycle on purpose.

Burke also collided with the driver of a Mitsubishi Outlander, who swerved in an attempt to avoid Day’s motorcycle as it slid off the road. The driver of the Mitsubishi was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Burke also sustained minor injuries and was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center.

Burke has been charged with negligent homicide, reckless manslaughter, first degree assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, witness tampering and vehicular assault.

He was arraigned in Merrimack District Court on May 1.

Under state law, if convicted, Burke could face up to 82 years in prison, up to 25 years of probation, up to $22,000 in fines and having his driver’s license revoked for at least seven years.
