United Way seeks volunteers to inspire young minds through reading and tutoring

By Staff | Apr 28, 2025

NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua is calling on residents to help spark a love of learning in local children by volunteering with two of its impactful education programs: Wee Read United and Learn United.

Wee Read United brings the joy of stories and creativity into local preschools, where volunteers read to children ages 3-5 and lead simple crafts and activities. Sessions take place once a week during the school day, with each child receiving a free book to take home and enjoy with their families. Sign up to read at https://tinyurl.com/WeeReadUnited.

Learn United supports students in grades K-12 in Nashua with reading and math through personalized tutoring. Volunteers are needed for the following roles:

-Tutors, who work one-on-one or in small groups to help students build academic confidence.

-Monitors, who are present during tutoring sessions to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone involved.

Register to volunteer as a tutor at unitedwaynashua.org/tutoring.

“These programs are powerful because they connect volunteers directly with students who benefit from extra encouragement and support,” said Michael Apfelberg, president of United Way of Greater Nashua. “Even just an hour a week can make a lasting impact on a child’s future.”

No teaching experience is necessary–training and guidance are provided. Volunteers can choose times and locations that work with their schedules. To learn more or sign up to volunteer, contact United Way at info@unitedwaynashua.org or 603-882-4011.
