MILFORD – Just after noon on March 23, Milford firefighters responded to a blaze that broke out at 154 South St.
While en route, fire crews could see a large column of smoke and a call was made for mutual aid.
Upon arrival, firefighters with Rescue 1 encountered heavy fire on the outside of the multi-family residence, which had spread to the attic and roof.
As crews battled the blaze, Chief Kenneth Flaherty arrived on the scene and requested a second alarm. The fire was ultimately elevated to a third alarm as additional engine and ladder crews were needed.
The fire was brought under control by 3:30 p.m., more than three hours after it started. South Street between Lincoln Street and Union Square remained closed for another five hours.

In addition to Milford, a total of nine fire departments responded including Amherst, Brookline, Bedford, Hollis, Merrimack, Wilton, Nashua, Lyndeborough and Mont Vernon.
Although many of the building’s eight units were occupied, all residents were able to safely evacuate and no one was injured.
Because the building is not livable, the American Red Cross is working with the building owner and residents to make temporary housing arrangements.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
